ЕСЛИ КТО ИЗ ВАС благочестив и Боголюбив, то насладись этим славным и светлым торжеством! Если кто раб благоразумный, то с радостью войди в радость Господа своего! Если кто потрудился постясь, то прими вознаграждение! Если кто поработал с первого часа, то получи сегодня должную плату!
Если кто пришел после третьего часа, то с благодарностью торжествуй! Если кто успел прийти только после шестого часа, не смущайся, ибо ничего не лишишься! Если кто замедлил до девятого часа, то приступи, не сомневаясь ни в чем. Если же кто пришел уже в одиннадцатый час, то не бойся своего замедления — ибо Господь многомилостив! IF ANY BE PIOUS and a lover of God, let him delight in this fair and radiant festival. If any be an honest servant, let him come in and rejoice in the joy of his Lord. If any have wearied himself with fasting, let him now enjoy the recompense. If any have worked from the first hour, let him receive today his just reward.

Христос Воскресе!
КАКОЕ БОГАТСТВО СОДЕРЖАНИЯ, сколько глубокого смысла и сколько светлой радости в этом кратком приветствии!
“Если бы Христос не воскрес, то суетной была бы вера наша,” — говорит апостол Павел, напрасной была бы и ваша надежда на будущее. Если бы смертью заканчивалось наше существование, тогда самым логичным было бы всеми возможными средствами стараться из всего извлекать для себя максимальную выгоду и удовольствие: “Будем есть и пить, ибо завтра умрем.” Если бы люди не имели идеалов и высшей цели существования, то какой угрюмой стала бы наша жизнь. Люди бы стали крайне жестокими и беспощадными. Каждый старался бы использовать других для своего удовольствия самым бесцеремонным образом.
Но Христос воскрес и победил смерть, авместе с ней и всякое зло! Своим воскресением Он доказал миру, что Он истинный Бог, что учение Его истинно и что все то, что Он обещал непременно сбудется. А Он обещал, что в Свое второе пришествие Он всех воздвигнет из мертвых. “Наступает время, когда все мертвые услышат голос Сына Божия, и услышав, оживут.” Тогда каждый из нас восстанет со своим собственным, но уже обновленным и нетленным телом. Тогда-то, наконец, начнется та настоящая жизнь, для которой Бог и создал людей. Никто не может точно объяснить, в чем она будет состоять, потому что тот мир не похож на наш. Как объяснить червю, никогда не выползавшему на поверхность земли, красоту природы, пение птиц, благоухание цветов, голубизну неба? “Не видело того око, не слышало то ухо и не приходило на сердце человеку, что уготовал Бог любящим Его.” Знаем только, что там не о чем будет волноваться, некого будет опасаться. Там все будут любить друг друга. Там будет непрестанная радость.
Следовательно, не жажда суетных здешних благ и страх умереть, а бодрое стремление к вечной жизни должно руководить нами и вдохновлять делать добро.
Не будем допускать, чтобы разные невзгоды жизни, низменные страсти или сведение счетов с обидчиками затмевали в нас чувство радости воскресения Христова. Будем стараться с каждым днем становиться чище и добрее, всех прощать и всех любить, как и Господь Иисус Христос возлюбил нас и умер за наши грехи.
Как путнику, возвращающемуся домой, не свойственно слишком огорчаться из-за неудобств путешествия, так и мы научимся спокойно принимать разные скорби, которые милостивый Господь допускает постигать нас ради нашей же духовной пользы. И как путнику неразумно будет обременять себя лишним багажом, когда дома его ждет большое богатство, так и мы научимся довольствоваться малым и самым необходимым. Ведь ничего материального мы не возьмем с собой, когда перейдем в ту жизнь.
Пусть же Пасхальная радость всегда воодушевляет нас делать добро и стремиться к праведности, потому что это подлинное богатство, которое перейдет с нами в вечность. И чем большую любовь мы приобретем, тем ближе мы будем к Богу, тем блаженнее нам будет там. Все это результат воскресения Христова. Будем же всегда благодарить Его, победителя ада и смерти!

Christ is Risen!
WHAT AN IMMENSE TREASURE, what a deep meaning and bright joy is in this greeting!
"If Christ be not risen again, then our faith is vain," says Apostle Paul, and our hope for the future is vain as well. If our existence were to end with death, it would seem logical for us to use all possible means to maximize worldly gain and pleasure: "And let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die." Imagine, how gloomy our life would be in the absence of higher ideals and goals! People would become very cruel and unforgiving. Everyone would seek to manipulate others to fulfill his own pleasures with the utmost rudness.
But Christ has risen, and defeated death, and all evil as well! By His Resurrection He has proved to the world that He is the true God and that His teaching is Truth, and that all of what He has promised will definitely come true. He promised that upon His second coming He would resurrect everyone from the dead. "The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.” Then everyone will rise with his own now incorrupt and transfigured body. Then, finally, he will begin the true life for which we all were created by God. No one can say precisely what it will be like, because our world is unlike the world to be. How can we explain the beauty of nature, the songs of birds, the fragrance of flowers and the beauty of the clear sky to a worm who has never emerged from soil? "That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love Him." We only know that there we will have no worry and no one to fear. Everyone will love each other and there will be everlasting joy.
So, the desire of vain, worldly pleasures and the fear of death must not be our guide. Our guide and inspiration for going good must be an active yearning for eternal life.
We must not allow the different sorrows of this life, the lowly passions, or the desire for revenge to cloud or obscure our joy of the radiant Resurrection of Christ. Let us strive to be pure and kinder toward everyone, to forgive and to love everyone as our Lord Jesus Christ loves us and died for our sins.
As a traveler approaching his home does not complain too much about the minor hardships of his journey, let us learn to accept calmly the sorrows that our merciful Lord allows to trouble us for our spiritual benefit. And as a traveler would not burden himself with excessive baggage while great treasure is awaiting him at home, let us learn to be satisfied with that which is truly necessary. We will not take material possessions with us anyway when we leave this life for eternity.
So let the Paschal joy inspire us always to do good and seek righteousness, because this is our true treasure that will follow us to everlasting life. And the greater the love that we acquire and give to others, the closer we will be to God, and the more blessedness we shall inherit. All this treasure is the result of the glorious Resurrection of our Lord and God and Savior Christ. So let us always praise and give thanks to Him for His victory over hell and death!

“По прошествии субботы, Мария Магдалина, Мария Иаковлева и Соломия купили ароматы, чтобы идти помазать Его. И весьма рано в первый день недели приходят ко гробу, при восходе солнца и говорят между собой: кто отвалит нам камень от гроба?”
ПОДВИГ МАРИИ МАГДАЛИНЫ и других жен-мироносиц, которые пошли помазать тело Иисуса Христа, понятен и близок тому, кто сам пережил годы гонений на Церковь в Советском Союзе. Тогда пойти в церковь требовало большого мужества и было опасно. Надо было украдкой пробираться к еще “действующей” церкви, иногда ночью, по темным улицам. Неизвестно было, служит ли еще священник, или его арестовали. А по пути в храм все могло случиться: соседи могли донести в соответствующие инстанции, могли уволить со службы, могли остановить на улицах и подвергнуть допросу и т.д. Люди боялись носить нательный крестик или держать иконы в доме.
В подобной опасности находились и жены-мироносицы. Вспомним, что самый порывистый и пламенный из апостолов Петр за два дня перед этим отрекся от Христа, испугавшись, что служанка донесет на него. Боясь ареста, разбежались и остальные ученики Христовы. А когда на третий день после распятия Христа они встретились, чтобы обсудить свою дальнейшую судьбу, то сделали это тайно, при запертых дверях, “страха ради иудейска.” Если Тот, Кто сотворил столько великих чудес и пользовался таким авторитетом в народе был осмеян, поруган, осужден и казнен самым позорным образом, то чего могли ожидать Его ученики, оказавшиеся вне закона и без всякой защиты. Их арест был вопросом лишь времени.

Учитывая все это, благоразумие должно было подсказать женам-мироносицам, что нечего “идти на рожон,” — все кончено. Учитель их унес с Собой в гроб их лучшие мечты. Зло торжествовало. Необходимо было поскорее скрыться где-нибудь и сидеть тише воды, ниже травы.
Но какая-то таинственная сила влекла жен-мироносиц к их Учителю, погребенному недалеко от места казни. Они чувствовали потребность исполнить свой последний долг перед Ним и докончить обряд погребения. Фактически Иосиф с Никодимом, хотя и наспех, совершили минимальный обряд: они обмыли тело Христа, умастили его благовонными мастями и обвили чистой плащаницей. Может быть, они не все сделали наилучшим способом, но, учитывая обстоятельства, сделали, что могли. Жены мироносицы знали, что вход во гроб завален тяжелым камнем, запечатан архиерейской печатью и охраняется вооруженной римской стражей. Зачем, вопреки всякому благоразумию, ставить себя в опасность и быть оскорбленными воинами, известными своей грубостью, или, что еще хуже, подвергнуться аресту и допросу со стороны иудейских начальников? Все равно все кончено.
Но преданные Христу мироносицы решили все же пойти и закончить обряд погребения. Что влекло их? — Беспредельная любовь к Учителю! Хотя Он умер, но те возвышенные мысли и чувства, которые они почерпнули от Него, были самыми светлыми и возвышенными, что они когда-либо испытали в своей жизни. Погас Светильник, но свет Его переселился в их сердца и продолжал просвещать и согревать их. Они получили от Него силу, которую ничто не могло остановить или запугать.
И что же получилось? Когда они пришли ко гробу, оказалось, что стража уже в страхе разбежалась, а тяжелый камень —отвален. И не только это, но в награду за свое мужество они первыми удостоились услышать ту весть, которая до сих пор радостью волнует наши сердца: Христос Воскрес! “Не ужасайтесь! — сказал им Ангел в облике светлого юноши. — Вы ищете Иисуса Назарянина, распятого? Его нет здесь. Он Воскрес! Вот место, где Он лежал.”
Насколько велика была их любовь, настолько и великой оказалась их награда: стать первыми провозвестницами воскресения и наследницами жизни вечной, которую принес людям Победитель ада и смерти!
Применяя к себе данное Евангельское повествование, надо признать, что подобно прочим ученикам Христовым и нас обуревает множество всевозможных страхов, которые препятствуют нам всецело любить нашего Спасителя. Хотя никакие преследования явно не угрожают нам , но мы многого боимся и опасаемся, например: не достичь желанного земного благополучия, или лишиться его, не получить пенсии и медицинских страховок. Боимся переутомиться лишним посещением храма, или ослабеть от соблюдения поста. Боимся обеднеть, жертвуя на храм или нуждающимся, боимся показаться святошами, если будем усердно жить по-христиански, боимся быть принятыми за чудаков, если будем с другими слишком кроткими и незлобивыми. Боимся чрезмерным подвигом лишить себя всяких физических удовольствий и радостей земной жизни. Эти и подобные, часто неосознанные опасения создают раздвоенность в нашем настроении и охлаждают нашу любовь к Спасителю. С одной стороны, нам бы хотелось стать лучше, но всякие волнения, пристрастия и страхи мешают нам.
Апостол Иоанн Богослов писал: “В любви нет страха, но совершенная любовь изгоняет страх, потому что в страхе есть мучение. Боящийся несовершен в любви.”
Следовательно, надо стараться прогонять от себя разные житейские страхи и всецело надеяться на помощь Божию. Для этого хорошо почаще размышлять о Спасителе, о всем, что Он сделал для нашего спасения, о Его постоянной заботе о нас, о всех делах милосердия, которые Он показал нам. Чем живее мы будем чувствовать Его любовь к нам, тем горячее будет наша любовь к Нему. Жены-мироносицы навсегда останутся примером совершенной любви и победы, которую эта любовь приносит.

“And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalane, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.”
THE DEVOTION OF ST. MARY Magdalene and the other Holy Myrrhbearers, who came to anoint the body of Jesus Christ, is clear and heartfelt by those who themselves lived through the times of church persecutions in the Soviet Union.
Those were dangerous times. It took great courage just to go to church then. One had to pick one’s way to the still “working” churches, sometimes at night, through the back streets. One was never sure if the priest there where still serving, or if they already had been arrested. Much danger lay in wait on one’s road to church: neighbors might report you to the “appropriate authorities,” you might be stopped and questioned, you might lose your job, etc. People were afraid to openly wear a cross on their chest or to have icons at home.
The Holy Myrrhbearing Women were in a similar situation. You will recall that even Peter, the most determined and courageous of Apostles, had renounced Christ only two days earlier, out of fear that a servant girl would report him. The other disciples of Christ, fearful of being arrested scattered abroad. When they met again to discuss what to do next, on the third day after Christ’s crucifixion, they did it secretly “for fear of the Jews.”
If the One Who had shown so many great miracles and was so revered by the people was laughed at, defiled, condemned, and executed in the most shameful way; what were His disciples to expect, finding themselves outlawed and without any protection.
It was only a matter of time until they would be arrested as well. Having this in mind, it was only sensible for the Myrrhbearing Women not “to kick against the goads,” it was all over. Their best hopes were gone along with their Teacher into the sepulcher. Evil was triumphant. It was prudent to hide somewhere, to lie low.
Still, some mysterious force was drawing the Myrrhbearers to their Teacher, buried not far from the place of execution. They felt the need to pay their last respects and to finish the burial rite. Actually, Joseph and Nicodemus had already done the rite of burial, even if only a minimal one: they had washed the body of Christ, anointed it with spices and wrapped it in clean linen. Of course they had no time to do everything required, but they did what they could, considering the circumstances. The Myrrhbearing Women knew that the entrance to the tomb was blocked by a large stone, sealed by the high priest’s seal and under the protection of the Roman guards. Why then, contrary to common sense, did they risk being insulted by soldiers known for their rudeness or, even worse, risk being arrested and interrogated by the Jewish leaders? It was all over.
But the dedicated women had nevertheless decided to go and complete the burial rite. What motivated them? Undoubtedly, boundless love toward the Teacher! Even though He had died, the heavenly ideas and feelings that He granted them were the most inspiring of all that they had experienced in their lives. The Lamp seemed to be extinguished, but its light had settled in the depth of their hearts and continued to enlighten and to warm them. They had received from Him the strength that nothing could either stop or dishearten.
And what happened? When they came unto the sepulcher, they found the guards scattered, and the heavy stone rolled back.
Not only this, but as a reward for their courage, they were the very first to hear the wonderful news that to this day makes our hearts rejoice: “Christ is Risen!” “Be not affrighted” — said an angel, appearing as a young man clothed in a bright garment: “Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: He is risen! He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him.” And as another reward for their great love the Myrrhbearing Women were appointed to be the first heralds of Christ’s victory over Hades and death!
If we now apply this Gospel passage to ourselves, we will have to admit that, like the rest of Christ’s disciples, we are also troubled and possessed by all sorts of fears and doubts that prevent us from truly loving our Savior. Even though we are in no danger of persecution, we are afraid of so many things; for example, afraid of losing or not being able to attain material welfare and desired prosperity, afraid of the uncertainties of the future, of being denied retirement benefits or medical insurance. We are afraid of overburdening ourselves by an extra visit to the church or prolonging our prayer, or of weakening if we fast too much. We are afraid that we will become impoverished if we donate money to the church or to those in need, afraid to be seen as hypocrites or sanctimonious if we become too zealous in leading a Christian life, afraid to be perceived as fools if we become too kind and too forgiving. We are afraid to deny ourselves the pleasures and joys of the world.
These and many other less obvious fears and worries create a dichotomy in our Christian attitude and cool our love for our Savior. Theoretically we wouldn’t mind being better Christians, but in practice we won’t make the sacrifices to become such.
The Holy Apostle John wrote: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear. Fear brings torment, and he that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
Therefore we should make every effort to drive away our various fears by reflecting more often on the great love and mercy of our Savior, by reminding ourselves of how much He suffered for us, how He constantly cares for us and protects us from different evils. The more we become aware of His love toward us, the stronger our love toward Him will grow and the stronger we will become.
The Holy Myrrhbearers will forever be for us an inspiring example of the all-conquering love.
